We had visitors as we dined on the deck yesterday. The bluebirds and their families came to the feeder just beyond the deck and entertained us with their antics. Bluebirds seldom come into populated areas, we are told. A huge number of trees have been removed from the neighborhood in the past couple of years due to disease and age, plus new subdivisions developed nearby so they may not have had much choice about where to live. We certainly never saw any until last winter. Seven of them huddled in a little group next to a planter that protected them from the vicious wind. Wheels set up a feeding station with meal worms and the neighbor set up a bluebird house this spring. This is the third hatch for this year. Daddy usually accompanies the fledglings over to the feeder, even after they are “teenagers”. Other well dressed guests attended the party as well. Brilliant yellow goldfinches darted about while red cardinals bounced around in the garden. Amazingly they all seemed totally unconcerned that we were eating our dinner. Maybe they are as entertained by us as we are by them!
