The family reunion en masse visited an ice cream shop Saturday night. I ended up in a booth with cousin who related a hilarious story of how she passed English in high school. Her teacher promised a C to anyone who entered and won a contest on Why My State Should ____. She already knew she she could not make sense of diagramming sentences and conjugating verbs. She was an artist. She also knew she needed to make the grade average required by the teacher/business/science college her parents championed. She worked diligently to perfect her premise and, to the teacher’s astonishment, won the contest. That C made sure she graduated! She matriculated in the parent’s chosen school — as an art major. She taught art to hundreds, married an artist and has a son who is an artist. Win, win!
