School started this week! I just got the garden in shape, sort of where it should have been by Memorial Day. We did make a lot of changes - got rid of a raised vegetable bed, added trees in the front and more. No matter what, my fall lament is always "Where did the summer go!?" Rocky the Rescue Cat has shaped us to be his servants with nothing more than "the disdainful look" and a few sharp meows. He rewards us with a head bump now and then, a lap sit of a couple of minutes and, if really pleased, allows an ear rub. We require little of him in return--- stay in one of your own beds (plural) for your naps (also plural), keep your claws to yourself and don't jump on flat surfaces higher than your head. He broke one of the cardinal rules this week and if you've ever had a cat, you'll understand his thought process! No one around - time to check out the kitchen. Up on the counter, sneak over to the sink. Right past this little blue light. Instant water flow. Instant high jump, landing halfway across the adjacent room. He stood bewildered, shook his whiskers ... [Read More]

Plumbing week here, ending with two plumbers working hard all Friday morning. No more leaks at the exterior OR inside faucets, new interior equipment that no longer flushes intermittently all day long but only on command, a new garbage disposal that works every time and a smaller, right sized kitchen faucet that turns on and off with a wave and doesn't send water cascading all over the counter. Plus refrigerator water line repairs that stopped major ongoing damage in the basement soffit. So many serious issues all at once that it was well worth the check I handed the master plumber! For the first time in my life, I ‘ve seen a garter snake. He/she/it keeps showing up on the west side of the house, when least expected, slithering out from under the edge of the walk by the gate. Actually there are two. A much bigger one poked a head out about the time I bent over to pull a weed from the rocks surrounding the egress window well. Needless to say, we both moved very quickly away from one another!!! They are “pretty” in their own way – preferably further away! -- and do their part to keep the pesky insects under control as they slither around the garden. But my heart races and I am high alert every time I see them and who needs that!!? So my solution is to stay on the other side of the house! May you find practical solutions for all your problems this week!! ... [Read More]
