Finally! The Powder Room Reveal. I told you about the agony of choosing color and then about the factors to consider in color choice, plus one great tip I discovered to make it easy if that isn’t your forte. Last week, I showed you some of the things we did on the way to a new and improved powder room. Wanna see how it turned out?
Open the powder room door from the hallway and you see the Eiffel Tower! Bold and totally unexpected. The Eiffel Tower piece dominates because of its size and placement but doesn’t overwhelm because it’s also simple. It’s a personal reminder of our “weekend in Paris”. The towel has the exact pewtery color of the art background as one of its elements and just tickles me when I see the two together. Yeh, I really am delighted by such things!
What you see is what you get. This room is just as small as it looks! A rug (from Target) combines the pewter and turquoise again. And no, the paint job at the baseboard isn’t nearly as bad as the photo makes it seem!
I changed the color of the picture frame so I could use it here– love the pop of the complementary orange color. The tank cover came from Wheels grandmother’s linens – who knew they made such things! The new wall cabinet is much bigger than what we had before. I am so happy that we finally have a place for “health and beauty”. Because of the different work and sleep schedules, the main bathrooms upstairs are not always available. I keep a second set of makeup, toothbrushes and key medications here, as well as quick first aid fixes and the vitamins that wouldn’t get taken if the consumer had to make a trip upstairs. Our homes have to support the life we live!
Because the room is small, boxy and utilitarian, I wanted to keep the eye moving. Going up seemed to be the solution. Plus this is what is reflected in the mirror from a certain and often used point of view in the room. So the top of the cabinet landed a display of a small collection of stoneware items while the metallic charger behind provides a bit of flash.
The new vanity (allen+ roth from Lowe’s) fit perfectly and also provides much more usable storage than the previous two door cabinet. I love that it is a no-stoop height too!
The mirror needed a bit of flourish above it for that height and eye movement thing I mentioned earlier. The brass of the light fixture was sprayed a silvery color to update it and make it a little less obvious.
The planter was fifty cents at a garage sale and is just the right size and color for this spot! The orchid is a total texture change and a color relief from the other accessories.
To the right of the sink displays some of the photos Wheels took in Alaska. We’ve not displayed any of our travel photos or mementoes before. The time just seemed right that this would become a sort of undercurrent theme in this round of house renovation.
The left of the sink – well, it’s been an experimental art gallery. The one that lasted the longest and seemed to fit best was the black framed monogram so it’s likely to be the permanent one. Plus it’s the one hanging there now — and there are other projects calling!
