We made our pilgrimage a few miles south to see the migrating Sandhill Cranes last week. Thousands of huge birds walk through harvested cornfields almost shoulder to shoulder searching for food. At sunset they soar into the sky, headed for a roosting place in the shallow water of the Platte River so they are safe from predators. Not that any predator would come near the cacophony from their distinct trilling cry raising from thousands of throats! After a few weeks to recuperate and build strength, they will continue the journey north to breed over the summer. Next fall they fly non-stop back south. I am so glad you fly by each week to link your posts! Thank you!

We live in an area surrounded by wetlands. We have many trios of sand cranes. As we live on a golf course surrounded by farms and trees we see the cranes arrive, havetheir babies, and then migrate. It must be good eating right off my bedroom window as every morning at the crack of dawn a few familes get together and make their “morning phone calls” to all their friends and then fly to the corn fields accross the street. We love them. They are not afraid at all of the golfers and typically just take their turns as they tee off. It is so much fun. Thank you for the opportunity to bring so many gifted bloggers together! Have a great week and I hope to see you at #overthemoon on Sunday and #thursdayfavoritethings!

Charlene, you made my day with this lovely feature! Thank you so much!
We’ve been noticing the migration of the Sandhill Cranes here in Michigan, too. High overhead we can hear them with their loud “squawking.”

That sound is certainly distinct, isn’t it? Once you’ve heard it, you’ll always know what it is!

I was working on a project the other day and the patio door was open when I heard that unique squawking sound. I looked up in the sky and finally saw a flock… flying in a v-formation squawking like crazy. As I watched that flock another flock descended from the clouds… they really fly high… and mingled with the first flock. They all circled around for a really long time, going up and down, and groups forming and rejoining. It was fascinating to watch.

A farmer we talked with at the viewing area mentioned the extraordinary way they begin their flight north, too. Circle around going higher and higher until they hit the jetstream and then like something out of Star Trek — gone in a flash! Spectacular — how lucky you’ve seen it!
