We visited a part of this 77,347 square mile state that we had not seen before this week. Yet everyone who settled in the western part of the United States in the 1800’s knew about it and thousands looked for the landmarks on their trek west. Chimney Rock was visible for almost 100 miles on the Plains and is still spectacular even though it has eroded considerably. Scott’s Bluff meant the travelers were nearing the mountains and things were about to get a whole lot more interesting. Short Stuff was our traveling companion as we took the easy drive to the top of the Bluff. He was very impressed: “I can’t believe I’m driving right into this rock” and “I can see the whole world up here”. He learned new words, too — like bovine. He walked up to life size representations of Longhorn oxen pulling a Conestoga wagon, promptly climbed atop one and declared “this is the best bovine ever!!!” A little slow but doesn’t require food and handles seven year old boys well — he could be right!
