First it was a single squirrel we called Skinny Tail. Then Fluffy Tail came. And now there is Tiny Squirrel. They take turns hanging upside down on a bird feeder, picking up one sunflower seed at a time and breaking them open to delicately chew the seed. Squirrels were all over our Ohio neighborhood with with lots of trees everywhere. Our back fence was their highway across the subdivision. These are Plains Squirrels living where there are not many trees for food or protection – but there are grain spills now at harvest time and we’re not far from good sized fields. Will they stick around and become full time residents for the gourmet meals? Or hitch a ride south with the harvest crews? Thanks for stopping by to share your awesome projects this week!

We recently cut back on our squirrel population by putting ground cayenne pepper on our sunflower seeds. We were going through about 40 pounds of seeds monthly trying to feed the birds, but the squirrels always got there first. We still have squirrels, not as many since some moved off to other yards. But they forage for other food in the yard, Instead of being first in line at the bird feeders. Thanks so much for having us all over to visit and share our links.

When we replaced the bird feeders, we bought the squirrel proof ones with the wire cages around them. The squirrels learned how to reach through the grid and snatch the seeds out of the small openings on the feeder itself! The squirrels discard the smaller seeds so birds are down on the ground scrambling for the squirrel rejects. No happy cardinals and other songbirds like those pictured on the seed bag! May have to try cayenne pepper here too, to right this affront!

For a fairly populated area we have our fair share of wild life. The dogs get quite a bit of exercise chasing them.

Isn’t that a balance of nature??? Dogs get exercise – wildlife retains quick response. No?

I just now drove in to see two squirrels playing in my front yard! I’m not sure I’ve ever seen that–they were fun to watch, but scampered off quickly. Thank you very much for hosting this lovely link party, Charlene. I’ve shared two posts and am off now to see what others have shared. Have a great week!

The squirrels are out in force around our lake cabin right now, too, and they have so many acorns that have dropped to choose from! Tis the season! Thanks for another GREAT party, Charlene! It is always fun to see the features and to share as well and we were especially excited to see our “Halloween Faves” post featured! Thank you! We’ve brought #5 and #10 today and we’ve found lots of inspiration to take us into the week ahead, too!

What a lovely little squirrel family! I wonder if they’ll decide to stay for the gourmet meals!
